Vail Kansas Home

July 14, 2016

We finally have a home in Kansas!  I lived in Army quarters as a child but have not lived on an Army post since graduating from West Point over 7 years ago.  We figured we would give on-post housing a shot while we are living in Kansas for a year, so Tom drove west a few weeks ago so that he could put us on the housing list.  If you are in the military or are a military brat you know that there is a wide range of on-post housing...some homes are new, some are from the mid-century, and some are over 100 years old.  I had no clue what we were going to get but for convenience sake I figured we would just take whatever we were offered.

Well, somehow things worked out in ways I never could have imagined and Tom was offered the most beautiful historic home!  Tom took these photos and sent them to me while I was still in South Carolina and I immediately fell in love.  These photos have been untouched and we have done TONS of cleaning since they were taken, but these should give you a good feel for the house.  It is about 115 years old and has the most interested details.  I'm obsessed with the first floor ceilings!  It's way bigger than anything I've ever lived in before and we won't have nearly enough furniture to fill it up...but that means I'll get to hunt for antiques and vintage pieces and I'll finally have a place to put them :)  There are 3 large bedrooms, hardwood floors, 2 fireplaces (non-functional), a butler's pantry, a built-in hutch in the dining room, a massive porch (with a haint blue ceiling!), and a basement!  Can you tell I'm excited?  The downside is that the kitchen is dated, there is no bathroom on the main floor and the bathroom that is upstairs is very small and very old.  The historical charm and the beautiful architecture has already won me over though, as well as the quiet street and nice neighbors.  I shared a home tour of the empty house on snapchat a few days ago (my username is dashofwhimsy) but our stuff is arriving TODAY so I'll start sharing decorating progress very soon!

  4. A tip from an experienced 100+ yr. home dweller in Kansas (Ft. Riley): Bug sticky traps will become your best friend. I love our home, but I do not love the brown recluse spiders (and other pests). Look out for them, as we didn't know we had them for over a year! They are extremely common here. :( Your home is beautiful, and maybe you will be lucky with no bug problem. I just felt the need to warn a fellow Army spouse...

    1. oh that is good to know. Thank you for the tip, Emily. I haven't seen any bugs in the house yet but I sure don't want to take any chances. The thought of brown recluse spiders freaks me out!
