"NYC Trash Chairs" Makeover Reveal

May 6, 2015
Ok y'all remember the chairs I found in the trash in NYC back in January?  (You can read the story here if you missed it.)  Well, I finally got them back from the upholsterers and I'm in love!

Just to recap, they are from the 1960's or 1970's and the same pair is selling for $3,600 on Chairish.  I found these on the street in NYC (in a trash pile) and here is the lovely photo of me finding them...before our mile-long trek back to our hotel with chairs on our heads.  Needless to say I was sore the next day because these chairs are so solid and heavy!

Here is what they looked like before:

And here is what they look like now!  Amazing transformation, huh?  Someone on instagram said they were "Beetlejuice-chic" and that made me laugh because I definitely agree.  Once they have cute, colorful pillows on them I think they will look a little less Beetlejuice-y though :)  That's my hope anyway!

Please excuse the mess surrounding the chairs...they are in our garage at the moment, which is where we store all the stuff that doesn't fit into this apartment.  They will soon make their way down to my family's beach cottage, and I can't wait to see how they look in their new home!

If you're in the DC area and looking for an affordable and talented upholsterer, look no further than Interiors Upholstering.  I was quoted ~$700 per chair by another company, but Interiors Upholstering did them for a reasonably priced $380 per chair (plus fabric).

    1. Thank you! Yeah there is no way I could have done it myself...the stripes would have looked terrible and very crooked!

  2. Hi, Katie, can you tell me where you got this fabric and the name of it? I have been looking for something like that for our beachy modern Danish chair. Ordered fabric I thought would work from fabric.com but the color turned out different in reality from what I expected. Thanks!
