Diamond in the Rough

October 3, 2013
When I was at my parents’ home one weekend this spring I found a treasure.  My wonderful neighbor Carol is a real estate agent and she had just sold the home of a little old lady that had lived in her house for nearly 40 years.  This lady was moving to an assisted living home, and told Carol that she could keep or sell the furniture (from the 1950s and 1960s) because she was unable to take it with her.  Carol was selling a dated looking mid century modern sofa at a yard sale, as well as a little chair in need of some TLC.  I immediately saw diamonds in the rough, and Carol gave them to me for FREE!!!  I have had a bit of an ikat obsession for the past year, and I knew that this was my opportunity to finally create my own personal statement piece for my living room.  After searching Pinterest and the internet for inspiration, I finally settled on the perfect Lewis and Sheron fabric for the sofa.  I used a local upholsterer, and within a few weeks I had the sofa I had always dreamed of.  I am absolutely in love with the result, and think that this is the prettiest sofa I ever did see.  I also got the chair recovered in a deep pink called Hibiscus by Hamilton Fabrics.  What do you think?

This was the sofa when I got it.  Bad color but good bones!

This is my sofa now!  I am in love with this fabric.  So fun!

    1. Thank you so much! And thanks for checking out my blog! I actually got them professionally reupholstered. The fabric on the sofa has such an intricate pattern, and if it wasn't aligned perfectly it would not have looked good (plus I sort of splurged on the fabric and didn't want to mess up and waste my money). The chairs I probably could have done, but they needed lots of additional padding and the wooden legs needed a little TLC. I may try to reupholster the next beat up piece of furniture I acquire, likely starting with something easy like dining room chairs. Thanks again for reading my blog!

    1. Thank you! I got the sofa upholstered in Atlanta by Gayle Upholstery (stennettgayle@yahoo.com). He did such a great job, especially considering how difficult the pattern was to line up perfectly. If you happen to be in the DC area, the wingback chairs were done by EC Robinson in the DC area. Here is the website: http://www.ecrobinsonupholstery.com/directions.htm. Hope that helps!
